Jason Law Launches Petition Drive to End Emissions Testing in St. Charles County
We, the undersigned, respectfully urge Missouri’s elected officials and regulatory agencies to end the outdated and burdensome emissions testing program in St. Charles County.
This program no longer serves its intended purpose. Today’s vehicles are built with advanced pollution controls, and state data shows that over 98% of cars pass the emissions test on the first try. Yet working families continue to lose time and money—often waiting hours to complete a test that offers little environmental benefit.
Meanwhile, the number of testing stations has dropped from 823 to just 762 statewide in recent years, creating longer wait times, scheduling delays, and fewer options for citizens trying to comply with the law.
Adding to the frustration, the Environmental Protection Agency keeps raising air quality standards even as Missouri's air quality has consistently improved. This constant “moving of the goalposts” unfairly penalizes residents in counties like St. Charles—especially when the only noncompliant air monitor is located near a coal plant, not a population center.
This is a broken program, and it’s time for common-sense reform. We believe the people—not unelected bureaucrats—should decide whether this mandate continues. We stand united in calling for its repeal or exemption in St. Charles County.
